THE AMERICAN FREESTYLE MOTOCROSS ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES 1st ANNUAL AMATEUR COMPETITION AND HONORS PROFESSIONAL RIDERS WITH INAUGURAL AWARDS CEREMONY

First Ever West Coast FMX Amateur Competition and Awards Show to take place at Pala Raceway and Casino, November 7th

Irvine, CA (September 30, 2009) - The American Freestyle Motocross Association (”AFMXA”), a governing collective of Freestyle Motocross riders and action sports industry leaders, announced details today for the 1st annual FMX Amateur Competition and professional Awards Ceremony, scheduled to take place at Pala Raceway and Casino in Pala, CA on November 7th, 2009.

“We have gathered the top professionals in Freestyle Motocross to kick off the first AFMXA Amateur Competition on the west coast, and recognize friends and inspirational figures in our industry at an Awards event,” said Leah Steiger, Executive Director for the AFMXA. “In keeping with the mission of the Association, we are developing an amateur circuit to further the sport. The AFMXA Awards celebrates individuals who’ve given so much to build the sport and foster the growth of those who are next in line.”

In order to qualify for the amateur competition, riders must be at least 14 years of age and submit video entries to www.afmxa.com. The top 10 selections will be chosen based on execution, style and innovation, and those riders will be invited to participate in the event. The judging panel is a “who’s who” of the sport, including Nate Adams, Ronnie Faisst, Jeremy “Twitch” Stenberg, Brian Deegan and Mike Mason, among others. A 1st, 2nd and 3rd place title will be presented, along with an award for “Best Whip.”

A professional FMX demo will take place after the amateur competition, showcasing the talents of the athletes on the judging panel and fellow riders, including Taka Higashino, Todd Potter and more.

The AFMXA Awards Show will recognize top athletes and companies for their accomplishments, commitment to and influence on the sport. Award categories include Best Riding Part in a Video, Biggest Slam, Best Spread in a Magazine, Unsung Hero Award, Legends Award, Top 3 in the Amateur Event and more. In memory of fellow FMX gold medalist, Jeremy Lusk, there will also be a Lusk Legacy Rider of the Year award given to this year’s most dedicated rider.

The AFMXA was organized in an effort to create a unified voice at all sanctioned and non-sanctioned freestyle motocross events, parks, facilities and demonstrations; and implement a safer environment for athletes. The Association encourages neck braces for riders; reports on standards for suitable weather conditions and proper ramp landings at events; assists with providing trained on-site and on-call medical assistance; and prepares safety policies and emergency response plans.

It is hard to believe, but the 2009 running of the Motocross of Nations is just around bend.  In fact the legendary race is now less than a week away and this year will take place in Franciacorta, Italy.  Never heard of it?  Neither had most of the motocross community until earlier this year. That is because there wasn’t a motocross track there until Italy won the bid to host the MXoN.

The track was only recently built at the Autodromo di Franciacorta road racing facility in the northern part of the country, right near the foothills of the Italian Alps and about one and a half hours east of Milan.  Therefore, much like last year’s race at Donington Park in the UK, no one has ever raced on this year’s MXoN course because it is purpose-built, specifically for this event.  Does this mean there is no home court advantage for the Italian team? In terms of the track, yes, but in every other respect, no.  Italy is very, very passionate about all forms of racing, and you better believe that the fans will be going absolutely nuts every time their riders, who include the 2008 and 2009 MX1 World Champions, go by.  Antonio Cairoli has become somewhat of a celebrity in his native land and his fans will be cheering him on all the way.

Of course, the United States will again be well represented with a team that includes two first time participants and one seasoned veteran of the MXoN.  Ryan Dungey will be representing his country in his very first outdoor 450 ride as the MX1 entry, with Jake Weimer looking very much like Ryan Villopoto aboard a Pro Circuit number two machine in the MX2 division.  Ivan Tedesco, who has helped bring home the bacon twice in his career, will again represent the USA in MX3 competition aboard his factory Honda.

This year’s race could prove to be one of the closer battles we have seen in recent years.  Although the US rarely gets a good look at the speed of European based talent during the year, this season in particular we witnessed the type of talent that can be produced across the Atlantic, with the likes of Christophe Pourcel (who has opted out of representing France this year), Britan’s Tommy Searle, South African and former MX2 Champ Tyla Rattray, along with impressive guest appearances by Belgian rider Clement Desalle (who scored a third in the first 450 moto at Washougal), and another South African Gareth Swanepoel  (450 Class sixth overall at Unadilla).  All of these riders will be participating this weekend and you can expect to see them all near the front of the pack.

Then there is Team Australia with Chad Reed in MX1, Brett Metcalfe in MX2, and Michael Byrne in MX3.  Its actually the identical team from last year with one very major difference.  Last year at this time, Reed only had a single 450 moto win to his credit, had not raced outdoors since his previous MXoN appearance in 2007 at Budds Creek (that is one entire year), and he had just switched over to Suzuki.  Oh what a difference a year makes.  Reed now has several overall wins in his pocket, is the current AMA 450 Class Champ, and is very comfortable aboard his yellow machine.  With Byrne and Metty backing him up, the Aussies will be very strong this year.

This weekend will be very interesting to say the least.  Unlike every other motocross race, the MXoN really is a team effort.  Even if a team has the fastest rider on the planet who completely dominates, that performance is meaningless if his teammates don’t place well.  For those of you who do not know, here is how the race works:

-Each participating country can enter three riders with one alternate in case of an injury.

-Of the countries entered, only 20 qualify for the three main motos.

-The three classes are MX1 (450s), MX2 (250s), and MX3 (Open) with combined class motos: MX1/MX2, MX2/MX3, and MX1/MX2.

-Points are scored by position, therefore first place in moto gets one point, two points for second, and so on.

-The worst finish for each country is discarded

The United States, France, and Belgium have finished in that order for the last two years.  Who knows what the podium will look like this year so be sure to watch all of the action LIVE on the Fox Racing website.  That’s right www.foxracing.com will be hosting will be the exclusive web-host of the 2009 MXoN’s. More details will be released soon. Fans can log onto www.foxracing.com starting Saturday 10/3 to view the Preview Show & Qualifying and Live Racing on Sunday 10/4.

For now, here is a list of each of the 37 different countries’ top three riders entered for this weekend’s action.  Who is your pick?

Bud with Nicolas Aubin and Gregory Aranda

After a great 2009 season, which is not finished as the team will enter the Motocross of Nations and several Supercross including Paris Bercy, team Bud Racing has already his mind in 2010. The young French squad will be once more involved in the World and French Championships, with Nicolas Aubin and Gregory Aranda.

During his second attempt at the highest level of racing, team Bud Racing claimed excellent results with two MX2 Grand Prix wins and a third final ranking with Gautier Paulin. The French MX1 title of David Vuillemin complete this great season, and the team expect similar or even better in 2010.

Always with a strong support from Kawasaki Europe and Kawasaki Motors France, team Bud will line up next season one rider in each class. In the MX2 category it’s Nicolas Aubin (21 years old) who joined the team, four years after being supported by Bud; winner of a MX2 GP and 3rd of the 2008 World Championship, ‘Nico’ had a difficult experience this season but proved several times that his potential was always strong. His teammate will be Gregory Aranda (20 years old) who is a pure product of the Kawasaki family; twice 85cc French champion, ‘Greg’ showed a great potential this season for his first experience on a 450. Youngest rider in this class, he finished several times in the ‘Top ten’ of a GP and was runner-up of David Vuillemin in France.

The team will improve its technical organization this winter, with a new trailer and a new workshop in Belgium. Gregory Aranda will appear for the first time with the Bud Racing colors at Bercy Supercross, and he will be joined a few weeks later by Nicolas Aubin. Both riders and Jacky Vimond will then fly to the USA after Christmas, to prepare next season in the best mental and physical conditions; they will be back in Europe for the first International races, and later the French and World Championships.

Stephane Dassé: “The main goal of Bud Racing has always been to give the best material and support to our riders, in order to collect the best results. We learnt a lot this season, and we’ll continue to improve our organization with a professional staff; Jacky Vimond is always working with us, and will coach both riders with physical and technical advices. Our team will be even more professional in 2010, it’s one of our goals, and we’ll have a strong team spirit. We’re happy to have two young and talented French kids with us, both were motivated to join us. Most of our partners already confirmed that they will follow us, thanks to Kawasaki, Pastorello, PSM and all the others that we can’t name individually. This season we were battling for the World title, that was not in our plan but we enjoyed the situation and expect to continue in 2010; Nicolas will be a contender for the MX2 podium, while Gregory has the potential to get strong results in the highly competitive MX1 class.”

Gregory Aranda: “I had the opportunity to enter a factory team, but for me it was too early and I decided to join team Bud where I will be able to work with Jacky Vimond. I felt necessary to work with such a great trainer, and I’m highly motivated to work with him; my goal next season will be to finish regularly in the top ten of the GP’s, including on sandy tracks. I know how important it is to be fit physically, and even if Jacky ask a lot to his riders it will not be a problem for me. There is a great atmosphere in the team, and I’m pleased to be part of Bud Racing.”

Nicolas Aubin: “I’m happy of my choice, and I’m convinced that it’s better for me to stay in the MX2 class rather than moving in the MX1. I’m sure that I still have chances to get the MX2 World Title, but I need to change something around me and in my preparation. Bud offered me this opportunity, I’m happy to work with Jacky Vimond and to be back with people that I know pretty well since we worked together in 2005.”

Before my brother Ross crashed last Friday, he had just spent a week in Italy on vacation, visiting some friends and riding at various tracks across Italy. Of course, he had a great time and had lots of stories to share with me about his trip. Sadly, he’s only told me a couple thus far, as there are some obviously more pressing issues at hand.

Yesterday morning while getting in a routine moto, Ross Maeda crashed and suffered paralyzing injuries. He broke/displaced three vertebrae in his lower back and underwent a seven-hour surgery last night to repair the damage. He also suffered a collapsed lung, broken collarbone, and a severe concussion among other injuries. Only time will tell if he will ever be able to walk again. For those who may be unfamiliar with Ross, he is the owner of Enzo Racing and is widely considered the king of motocross suspension. More importantly, he is, and has been, an inspiration and mentor to everyone of us in the motocross industry including his brother, our Editor-in-Chief, Donn.

From Donn’s blog:

My big brother Ross has been my hero since I was a little kid, and I’ve idolized him for as long as I can remember. He is the reason I started riding motocross bikes, he is the one who sparked my interest in photography, he taught me how to ride and race, and he is the person I bounce magazine ideas off of when I need a second opinion.

Yesterday, Rossi crashed and suffered paralyzing injuries. He broke/displaced three vertebrae in his lower back and underwent a seven-hour surgery to repair the damage. Only time will tell if he will ever be able to walk again. Ross is a bad ass, though, and I know that if anyone can bounce back from this, it’s him.

To say that I am devastated would be an understatement. I’ve always said that Ross is my guideline as to how long I will be able to be the Editor of TransWorld Motocross. At 54, he still hauls ass on a mx track and has been a source of inspiration for me. “If Rossi can still rip at 54, I want to, also,” I’d think. I don’t want to be the editor of this magazine any longer when I can’t get around the track at a decent clip, so that’s why I’ve always looked to Ross for a time estimate. Now…I don’t know.

Ross is a fighter, and I know that he will get through this. All we can do is stay positive, think good thoughts, and keep him in our prayers. Think a good thought about my big brother for me, will you?

Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. We are all pushing for him, and are trying to stay as positive as he is.

A Bad News, and A Very Good One for the Freestyle Contest

Injured Freestyler Thomas Pagès Withdraws
World’s Best, Mat Rebeaud, Coming to Montreal Supermotocross for the First Time
Montreal, September 23, 2009 - Organizers of the 32nd running of Montreal Supermotocross, presented by Coors Light and Parts Canada had important news to share at today’s press conference in Montreal, regarding the Freestyle portion of the event. Fans at Olympic stadium on October 3 will not get to see the spectacular Thomas Pagès, who recently suffered a broken wrist. However, thanks to the collaboration of Red Bull and KTM, Mat Rebeaud, considered the best freestyler in the world, will join the lineup at the Montreal Supermotocross. The much anticipated contest between French-speaking overseas cousins Frenchman Charly Pagès and Québec-born Benoît Milot, now adds a third player from a third country to the mix, Swiss Mat Rebeaud.“We are saddened to learn of Tom Pagès, a man who made numerous fans here last year, withdrawal from out event. We certainly wish him a speedy recovery from his injury. However happily for Montreal fans, we have reached an agreement with Mat Rebeaud, who is, in our estimation the greatest freestyler in the world. I think the contest between Mat, Charly Pagès and our own Ben Milot will be a memorable one, explained Pierre Corbeil, the event promoter. “I’d like to remind fans to bring their cameras in order to capture their incredible jumps and secure lasting memories of probably some of the greatest moments in the history of the Montreal Supermotocross.”

Charly Pagès, the 28-year old from France, is a regular on the international competition scene and recently competed in the summer X-Games and the Red Bull X-Fighters (RBXF) tour. Since 2000, the year following his first victory in Montreal, Benoît Milot has participated in all the big competitions in the U.S. and Europe, including the X-Games, the World Cup, the Red Bull X-Fighters tour and dozens of other high profile events. Last year, while recovering from a broken ankle, the Yamachiche veteran had to skip the Montreal event.

“With Charly Pagès and Mat Rebeaud entered, expect to hear French as the main language spoken on the freestyle sidelines,” said Benoît Milot. “The competition will be very strong. Mat is a great guy, but first and foremost, he’s a fantastic freestyler. We’re going to have to pull out our best stuff to beat him. One thing is sure, the big winners

of the night will be the fans in attendance.”

A native of Payerne, Switzerland, Rebeaud will make his first visit to Montreal. He holds the world record for the highest jump ever made (11 meters), and over the past five years has built one of the most impressive records. World runner-up of the IFMXF in Hamburg in 2004, he came back the following year to become ranked best freestyler in the same IFMXF after winning eight events in the Night of the Jumps series. FIM world champion in 2006, he also joined Red Bull X Fighters tour, winning the Mexico City event a feat he would repeat in 2008. In this championship, he now counts four victories and 10 podiums. Runner-up of the RBXF in 2007 and champion in 2008, he also earned three silver medals at the X-Games.

The trio of Milot, Pages and Rebeaud, will compete in the Freestyle portion of Montreal Supermotocross, along with Californian Wiley Fullmer, nicknamed the elastic man, as well as with British Columbia natives Morgan Kaliszuk and Jeff Banks. To learn more about Mat Rebeaud, visit

www.matrebeaud.com, Information on Charly Pagès can be found at www.brothers-trip.com while Benoît Milot website is located at www.benmilot.com.In it’s 32nd year, the Montreal Supermotocross is the longest continuously running sporting event in Montreal. It is one of the most popular events presented in Quebec each year, attracting nearly 50,000 spectators. This year more than 150 participants from Canada, the United States and Europe will have accepted the organizers invitation to enter the October 3rd event.

kn1m3402-Removable upper arm guards

-Designed to be worn over or under a jersey

-Made for riders in the 140-185 lbs. and 5’4-6’0 range

What We Liked:

-Very light weight and simple construction.

-Simple buckle system with no moving parts.

-Removable front and rear panels make guard very comfortable when worn with a Leatt Brace.

-No extra bulk means the roost deflector is virtually unnoticeable on the track.

-Foam liner is quite comfy.

What We Didn’t Like:

-Why bother with the arm guards? They probably add an extra $30 to the cost of the protector and we never use them.

-Although the buckle system is simple, they can also be difficult to snap on properly and might be problematic in an emergency.kn1m3408

-Considering how basic the Infinity is, nearly 140 smackers seems a little steep.

What We Really Think:

When it comes to motocross, it is pretty much impossible to wear enough protection.  The problem is finding a balance between sufficient protection and  minimized bulk.  Of all the hundreds of chest/roost guard designs we have seen through the years, the Acerbis Infinity Roost Deflector is certainly on the simpler side of things.  If you do not notice something when you are out on the track, that is a good thing, and such was the case with the Infinity.  After removing the front and back upper panels, the guard worked extremely well with a Leatt Brace and can even be used in lieu of the T-type strap that comes with the Leatts to help secure the brace.  The Infinity is definitely worth checking out.

A few weeks ago, the motocross community was struck with some sad news.  Young up and comer, Justin Weeks, suffered a horrible crash during the week following the Budds Creek National. Justin had recently graduated from the amateur ranks at Loretta Lynn’s and made his professional debut at Unadilla scoring 18-15 moto scores.  After Budds Creek, Justin was at a local race in Michigan when his bike bogged on the face of a small double during practice.  The resulting crash sent the young Suzuki rider over the bars and directly into the face of the landing.  Among his injuries, Justin suffered a broken jaw and three fractured vertebrae.  While there is no visible damage to the spinal cord, Justin currently has no feeling below mid-chest.

Justin is lucky enough to have some very caring people in his life, and we recently spoke with his girlfriend, Maria.  She has taken the liberty of setting up a website for Justin on which she has regular updates on his condition and has set up a donation page for anyone willing to help out this fellow racer.  Most of us here at TransWorld are avid MX enthusiasts who not only follow the sport, but also ride on a regular basis, so news of this kind hits very close to home.  Having watched Justin at both Unadilla and Budds Creek, there is no doubt the kid has some talent.  Our thoughts are with Justin, his family and his friends.  Please take a few minutes to visit www.justinweeks381.com

More than 50 riders registered for the main event

Four Former Montreal Supermotocross Champions
on October 3rd MX1 Program at Olympic Stadium

Montreal, October 17, 2009 - Fans attending the 32nd edition of Montreal Supermotocross presented by Coors Light and Parts Canada, will see four former champions compete in the MX1 class during this annual fall classic. Americans Ryan Clark, Jason Thomas and Nicholas Wey, along with Canadian Dusty Klatt have all confirmed that they will be on track at the Olympic stadium track on October 3. All four will go head-to-head with Canadian MX1 champion, Colton Faciotti, as well as with many other American and Canadian racers familiar to the Montreal crowd. The Quebec contingent will be headed by Tim Tremblay, the highest placing Quebecer during the summer outdoor Canadian championship, as well as other regulars of the Montreal final such as Marco Dubé, Simon Homans and Marc-Antoine Généreux. One of the top competitors of the provincial championship, Kaven Benoît will also participate.

“More than 50 racers have already registered for the main event and the list keeps on growing. We are very proud of this slate of MX1 competitors we are offering to our spectators. This confirms that the Montreal Supermotocross final is, after 32 years, an extremely popular non-championship event for riders from across North America,” explained Pierre Corbeil, the event promoter. “Many of those currently registered have a legitimate shot at winning this event, especially since the course, designed by Jean-Sébastien Roy, is extremely tight and very demanding, which should narrow the gap. We will probably have one of the most hotly contested finals in our history” predicted the event spokesman.

Of the four Montreal event champions, it is Florida veteran, Jason Thomas, who boasts the best record. On top of his 2005 win, he has graced the podium on four additional occasions including last year when he finished third behind Jean-Sébastien Roy and Michael Willard. Ryan Clark, a veteran from Arizona who finished in ninth place in 2008, was victorious at Olympic stadium the year before, while Nick Wey, a supercross specialist from Michigan earned his win here in 2004. Dusty Klatt of British Columbia and runner-up in the Canadian outdoor championships for the last two years, has limited experience on the Olympic stadium course. However, he claimed the win in 2006 in one of his rare appearances here.

British Columbia youngster Colton Faciotti, the Canadian outdoor champion for the last two years, could well be on his way to the top spot on the podium. He counts three appearances at the Montreal finals among his list of accomplishments, finishing 16th in 2006, 13th in 2007 and finally in 4th place last year.

The Quebecers: Hardened veterans to watch

Spectators from across the province of Quebec will, at the October 3rd event, have ample opportunity to cheer on their very own, all of whom have vast experience on the Olympic stadium course, with the crowds, the overexcited atmosphere and the risks of being flung into the outposts. Tim Tremblay from Sainte-Jeanne d’Arc in Lac Saint-Jean, returning after a serious injury suffered in 2008, finished the 2009 Canadian outdoor championship in 9th place. He has five MX2 starts to his record at Olympic stadium, along with a single MX1 start since he first appeared at the Olympic stadium in 2003. In MX2, he has never finished further than ninth place. Also returning this year is veteran Marco Dubé. The rider from Bas-Saint-Laurent will make his 13th appearance at the Montreal classic.

Always popular with the Montreal crowd, Simon Homans from Sherbrooke and Marc-Antoine Généreux from St-Césaire, with their respective sixth and 11th place finishes last year, could also find themselves among the leaders. Same goes for the young and talented Kaven Benoît from Notre-Dame-du-Bon-Conseil who, in 2008 just missed by a single place, participating in his first final.

A place in history

The 32nd edition of the Montreal Supermotocross is the longest continuously running event in Montreal. Since its inaugural event in 1977, 1,618,720 spectators have crossed the turnstiles at Olympic stadium to watch such greats as Ross Pederson, Carl Vaillancourt, Jean-Sébastien Roy and other talented riders from near and far. It is one of the most popular events presented in Quebec each year, attracting nearly 50,000 spectators. This year more than 150 participants from Canada, the United States and Europe will accept the organizers invitation to the October 3rd event.

The best seats in the house, as well as all reserved seating, are currently on sale, and can be ordered online at Admission (www.admission.com or by calling (514) 790-1245 or 1 800 361-4597). Prices range from $10.00, $19.00, and $28.00 to $37.50. Tickets are also available at participating motorcycle dealers in all regions of Quebec. Final podium for Gautier Paulin

Gautier Paulin secured the final podium celebration during the fifteenth and last round of the season, and offered to Bud Racing Kawasaki its first main International result. David Vuillemin ended his racing career with an eighth position during the last heat of the campaign.

Due to heavy rain in the area of Santa Cataline, the traditional program had been changed, with all the racing, including qualifications, re-scheduled for Sunday. The traditional qualification heat was replaced by a brief timed practice period, that was successful for Gautier Paulin fifth in the same second as the poleman. In the MX1 class position David Vuillemin snatched the eleventh position, and both were confident as the track was in perfect condition for the races despite all the previous rain.

Gautier Paulin was in the top ten of the first start, and after a couple of fast laps he reached the sixth position behind Gonçalves; despite all his efforts it was his final ranking in this moto. Fifth at mid-race of the last heat of the year, Gautier had a technical problem on the bike and didn’t cross the finish line but the 19 years old Frenchman, who will be part of the national team during the Motocross of Nations in three weeks time, climbed on the third step of the final 2009 championship. In the MX1 class David had a bad start in the opening race and was back in fifteenth position when he had to retire during the fifth lap with brake trouble. Then for the last race of his career David enjoyed the spectacular layout and finished in eighth position, for a thirteenth final rank in the series.

David Vuillemin: “I’m happy with this weekend. I would have been in the top ten of the first race without a problem with my rear brake and later I finished eighth for the last race of my career. My start wasn’t so good but I passed a couple of riders including Leok and Swanepoel, I had a lot of fun there. The track was well prepared, with deep ruts and a nice ground; it’s incredible to see how good the track was despite the heavy rain we had during the week. The organizers did a great job and I’m happy to finish my career here, it was nice to be back for an oversea event where the atmosphere is always different.”

Gautier Paulin: “My first race was good, I got a great start but Roczen made a mistake in front of me and I lost some positions during the first lap. I came back to sixth behind Gonçalves and I couldn’t found a place to pass him but this result was enough to secure third position in the series. The second start was not as good but I was back in fifth place when a technical problem stopped me; I didn’t finished the race but I had a lot of fun on this technical layout for my last race with a 250 four-stroke this season. We will now focus on the 450 that I will ride at the Motocross of Nations and several supercross events; we already did some testing and my goal at the Nations will be to get a team title as I missed the individual one.”

Stephane Dassé: “This final round was a success and we’re happy, the Brazilian organizers deserved it as they did a great job to prepare the event. Gautier secured his third position in the series during the first race, then he was stopped by a technical problem but the most important was the overall podium. David did a great second heat, he came back from fourteenth to eighth and it was a pleasure to work with him during this last race of his career. No we’ll prepare the next races with the 450, Gautier will race the Motocross of Nations and a couple of Supercross alongside Gregory Aranda who already integrate the team. “

Short and Marsack Podium for Fly Racing at The Duells SX.

Fly Racing’s Andrew Short and Jake Marsack made the trip to Sweden last weekend to race in the Duells Supercross. Short came into the evening strong, winning his heat race and his semi, before going on to take the win in the main event. Jake Marsack also rode an impressive race marching his way to a third overall in the main event and making a fantastic showing for Fly Racing in the Swedish Supercross.

Other Fly Racing riders making the trek overseas were Alex Martin and Cole Siebler. Martin qualified for the main event and rode his way to a 6th place finish, while Siebler suffered a bit of bad luck, catching a banner in his rear wheel while making a move for third during the main event, which resulted in a DNF.

Fly Racing would like to congratulate Andrew Short And Jake Marsack on their podium finishes in Sweden.

SLAM logo

The 2009 Dirt Days festival in Riverside, CA marked the first annual TransWorld SLAM presented by Red Bull, and we must say it was a HUGE success. Not only because it went off without a hitch, but because the racing was absolutely incredible. Everyone in attendance was treated to a unique and exciting event. The one-on-one bracket style racing allowed spectators to see non-stop battles from gate drop to checkers. With $5,000 and a sweet TransWorld Red Bull SLAM championship belt on the line, no love was lost between the riders. Beofre the race KTM’s Mike Sleeter said, “There aren’t going to be any friends made this weekend.” He was half right. On the track, it was no-holds-barred racing; but once the checkered flag waved, the riders were as happy as can be. With no other race of its kind out there, the SLAM is a perfect pre/post-season watermark for up-and-comers and seasoned pros alike. There is no doubt that the SLAM will become a favorite amongst motocross’ elite.

Start

After a qualifying race for bracket seeding, riders went head-to-head for a two-lap sprint around the dynamic Milestone pro track, and with single elimination, it was do or die. In the qualifier, Dean Wilson, aboard a Canidae/Motosport/Kawasaki snuck in from the outside to grab the holeshot and the early lead. Veteran Chris Gosselaar slid in behind with KTM/One Industries’ Miike Sleeter nipping at his toes. With only four laps grab top seeding, Wilson quickly checked out. Lil’ Goose and Sleetdog couldn’t catch the young Kawi rider, and soon Blake Baggett, who had a breakout performance in the second moto at Steel City, got into the mix. He made his move on Sleeter, then moved on to hunting Goose down. In the last corner of the final lap, it looked like Baggett may get Goose, but the vet held on to the second seed in photo-finish fashion.

Qualifying Results
1. Dean Wilson
2. Chris Gosselaar
3. Blake Baggett
4. Mike Sleeter
5. Travis Baker
6. PJ Larson
7. Dan Reardon
8. Bryce Vallee
9. Tyler Bright
10. Canada
11. Sean Borkenhagen
12. Daniel Hendrix
13. Westin Peick
14. Jason Grandzjuk
15. Sean Kranyak
16. Chris Blose

After qualifying the bracket looked like this…

Slam Results

The highlight races, other than the sensational final battle between Dan Reardon and Dean Wilson of course, had to be the Wilson/Baggett battle and the Reardon/PJ Larson battle. In both semi-finals, it was tight racing and it came down to the wire. In the final, Reardon edged out Wilson in the first turn and led the entire first lap. As the two came around for lap two, Wilson inched closer to Reardon, making his move on the backside of the track. Pushing Reardon wide, Wilson maintained his momentum and took the lead. Reardon battled back, but Wilson took the checkers and the 5K. Not a bad way to end a fun weekend in Riverside.

Dirt Days

If you missed Dirt Days again this year then, well, it better because you live far away and the failing economy kept you from purchasing a plane ticket (although Loco Dave has no excuse). This year, by far, was the biggest and best Dirt days so far for TransWorld and everyone else involved. With more vendors than you could shake a pitboard at, the LocoMX.com center stage, a crap-load of free track riding, jump shows from the Metal Mulisha, The TransWorld SLAM presented by Red Bull, the Model Search presented by Von Zipper, and countless other awesomeness, there was no other place on earth better to be this weekend than Milestone Ranch MX park in Riverside, CA.

Monday Kickstart - Dirt Days

Ball Park was in full effect again this year at Dirt Days serving up those delicious dogs for anyone who needed one... or in Skinny's case, five.

As you might have guessed, the Miss Dirt Days Model Search presented by Von Zipper attracted quite a crowd. With a preliminary competition on each day, two finalists from Saturday and four finalists from Sunday squared off in the final for the coveted crown. The winner not only received a $250 Von Zipper check, she also won a web photo gallery on twmx.com and a poster in an upcoming issue of TransWorld Motocross Magazine.

The winner of the 2009 Miss Dirt Days Model Search is… MEGAN! Wheeeeee!

CANELINHA (BRAZIL), 13 September 2009 – Two years after leaving the UEM EMX2 series with a bitter fourth, 19-year-old Musquin made up for it by grasping this year’s MX2 World Title which remains with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team after Tyla Rattray’s win last season.

The season of the young Frenchman was distinguished by several important achievements such as his maiden podium appearance (Faenza), his maiden GP win and pole (both at Sevlievo). Though he had a troublesome switch from Honda to KTM, which forced Musquin off the Swedish GP, he made up for with a strong end of the season and the eventual Title.
